Coral Bells - Obsidian
The Coral Bells Obsidian, Heuchera 'Obsidian' (PP14,836), with it's Jet Black leaves, has the darkest foilage to date of the Coral Bells. Taller shoots of cream colored flowers appear on this evergreen variety in June. Plant the Obsidian with Coral Bells Lime Ricky, Marmalade or Peach Flambe for a fantastic color contrast. Coral Bells are grown more for their foliage color but the small blooms that they contain will attract hummingbirds. Like most Coral Bells, it thrives in partial sunlight but once established it will also grow in shade. Astilbe - Key Largo The Astilbe ‘Key Largo’, 'Astilbe simplicifolia', is a colorful feathery flower with bright shell pink blooms and shiny deep green foliage. ‘Key Largo’ is known to produce twice as many flowers than other types of Astilbe. The flowers contrast wonderfully with the dark green glossy foliage. Astilbe ‘Key Largo’ blooms in mid summer and is 16-20” tall and a plant width of 18-24”. Key largo is most successfully grown in a shady area but can tolerate some morning sun. A moist, well-drained area is key for this plant. In order to keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring. Astilbe can be used as cut flowers, perennial borders or shade gardens with Hosta’s and Ferns. Astilbe is considered to be deer resistant and will attract hummingbirds. |
