Rose of Sharon - Minerva

Minerva Hibiscus, Hibiscus syriacus 'Minerva', is an upright shrub that exhibits large saucer shaped flowers that bloom from July until frost. The flowers are single, lavender colored, with a bold dark red center. It has a waxy dark green foliage and is valuable as a specimen plant. Minerva is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, but there is better flowering in full sun. It prefers moist, organically rich soils, but tolerates poor soils and some drought, and is very tolerant of summer heat and humidity. You may get larger flowers by pruning back hard to 2-3 buds in early spring, otherwise, just prune to shape. Minerva may be massed or planted in groups, but also makes a great hedge. It is a vigorous, erect, shrub that typically grows 5-8' tall, and has a long, early-summer to fall bloom period. ... more info

Barberry-Red Leaf Japanese The Barberry bush or RedLeaf Japanese bush, Berberis thunbergii, is a deciduous shrub reaching up to 24" tall and about 30" wide. The branches are slender, spiny, and small, and the leaves are roundly oval in a deep red to purple color. The small, yellow flowers borne beneath leaves, from April to May, are not showy. Bright red berries can be found along stems from late fall through winter. Ironically, this is never really considered a feature of this plant. Barberry bushes are best located in full sun. This plant is tolerant of many types of soil, but will not do well in wet to very moist soils. As name Barberry implies, this makes an excellent hedge or filler shrub.
